What is it?

The screening tour of Crispin Glover’s film “What is it?” stopped in Hollywood over the weekend at the Egyptian Theatre. I attended the final night on Sunday. Crispin himself presented his Big Slide Show prior to the movie. It consisted of him reading from his collection of eight books. Pages of the books were projected onto the silver screen while Crispin stood on a platform in front to read, essentially perform, from each book. He was incredibly passionate and entertaining, with clever lines, motioning and energy.
“What is it?” was unlike any other motion picture I have every seen. Almost the entire cast is comprised of people with down syndrome. Even though I’m still not sure of what it is, Crispin came out and did his best to answer the audiences questions after the show (that was quite entertaining in itself). The story and intention of “What is it?”, the first of a trilogy, did become somewhat clearer, but I’d still like to see it again. I won’t even bother attempting to explain anything here! Overall it was an unique experience, an evening with one of my favorite actors and personas in moviemaking. The second part of the trilogy, “Everything is fine”, will debut at next year’s Sundance festival. I highly recommend following up on anything Crispin Glover is involved in.
