Living legends Sonic Youth played the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles last night. It was further proof that they haven’t lost a step or missed a beat after decades of musical service. The majority of songs were off of their most recent Rather Ripped album, which is rather rad. However, they opened up with “Candle”; Lee Ranaldo played “Eric’s Trip,” and the encore included the classic “Teenage Riot” (all three from Daydream Nation). When they took the stage I was pleasantly surprised to see former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold had joined the group. They even covered a Pavement song in the set. Overall, Kim is still super sexy, Lee Ranaldo is still a bad ass, and Thurston Moore still has the most awesome stage presence, while the somewhat unsung Steve Shelly still cranks out the beats to fuel this rock and roll ruckus.
