El Perro Del Mar played a Humpday session at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood this week. My presence at this show was yet another example of how the internet has changed music and broadened fans’ exposure to artists. A couple months ago I heard about El Perro Del Mar through the KEXP Song of the Day podcast (thank you Adam Curry) using iPodder (not Mac related). “God Knows” was featured one day and I totally dug EPDM’s sound, especially the vocals of Sarah Assbring. Then a few weeks ago LAWeekly.com had them listed playing two shows in the area and boom! => I’m at the show.
This foursome from Gothenburg, Sweden drew me in with their happy-sad dichotomy, remnant of doo-wop 50’s and 60’s style, yet modern using the visceral vibes of Assbring. At times she couldn’t sound sweeter, and other times so sad she challenged the likes of Morrissey. The simple and repetitive lyrics give El Perro’s songs an even more idlyic feel, like “I’m going for to buy me some candy” and “I can’t understand people”. Assbring opened up alone on stage with the latter, People.
